What is Soul Purpose, Really?

Part 3 of The Soul's Journey - Living Your Soul's Purpose
We often equate purpose with external achievements—a job title, educational degrees, family roles, or the long list of things we've accomplished. It’s no surprise—we live in a world where “What do you do?” is one of the first questions asked in any conversation. But these roles and milestones, while meaningful, don’t fully capture the deeper essence of who we are and why we’re here.
Soul purpose is not a job. It’s not a task. It’s not even a destination.
Soul purpose is a way of being.
Responsibility vs. Soul Purpose: A Needed Distinction
"Your soul purpose isn't what you do—it's how you show up in all that you do. It's not the role you play, but the truth you embody."

We all wear many roles in life—parent, partner, provider, leader, caregiver, friend, employee, employer, etc. These roles come with responsibilities, and often a sense of identity. Whether it's building a career, supporting a family, nurturing relationships, or showing up for community, these outward roles can begin to define who we believe we are.
And yet, our soul purpose is something deeper. It's not tied to what we do for others, or how much we achieve—it's about who we are at our core. It's the thread of truth and presence that weaves through every role, every stage of life, and every transformation.
Your soul purpose isn't limited to your career path, family structure, roles, or routines. It’s not confined to the titles you hold, the expectations placed on you, or the responsibilities you juggle. It's the energy you bring into those spaces. It's the lightness you offer, the compassion you embody, the creativity you express, the presence you hold. While responsibilities may shift and roles may evolve, your purpose remains steady—sometimes quiet, sometimes bold—but always rooted in your essence.
Purpose Isn’t Just About Doing — It’s About Being
What if your soul’s purpose isn’t something you chase or achieve—but something you feel and live?
What if your purpose is to live a life of joy?
To choose love, freedom, adventure, and presence as your compass.
To be in relationships that nourish you. To say yes to activities that light you up.
To find joy in even the smallest moments—and let that joy become your way of being in the world.
We’ve been taught that purpose should be productive. That if we work hard enough, push long enough, sacrifice more, then purpose will reward us with success or satisfaction. But your soul doesn’t thrive in pressure. It thrives in freedom. Joy is not a byproduct—it’s a pathway. And when you begin to live from a place of joy, your life transforms.
This is exactly what happened for one of my clients, Megan.
She came into her equine coaching session feeling ready to walk away from her business. It was something she loved—her heart’s work. But after years of struggle, it simply wasn’t supporting her in the ways she needed. Emotionally, financially, energetically.
She had done everything right: worked harder, invested more, followed all the strategies that promised success. And still, she felt trapped. Anxious. Out of alignment. The thought of getting a “regular job” made her feel like a failure, like she was abandoning her purpose.
But something shifted in her session with the horses.
As she stood in the arena with my mare Whisper feeling her calm and grounded presence, Megan’s perspective cracked open. She said, “I keep thinking freedom will come after I make it work. But what if freedom comes first?”
In that moment, she realized that getting a steady job—something she had resisted—might actually be the key to the freedom she craved. Not a sign of giving up, but a step toward reclaiming her joy. With that foundation beneath her, she could build her life in a way that felt supported, sustainable, and expansive. She could keep her business alive on her own terms. She could explore new adventures she currently didn’t have the energy or resources for. Her joy didn’t have to come after. It could come now.
That’s soul purpose in action. Not clinging to what’s expected but choosing what brings life.
So ask yourself: What if my purpose is to be joy?
What if the way I show up—with curiosity, freedom, and love—is enough?
And what if, by living that way, everything else starts to fall into place?
There’s a difference between a fleeting moment of happiness and the kind of deep, abiding joy that anchors your life. Joy in the moment might come from a laugh with a friend, a walk in nature, or a delicious meal. But soul-level joy runs deeper. It weaves through every part of your life—how you love, how you lead, how you make decisions, how you honor yourself. It’s not just about feeling good in the moment but creating a life that is good to live. When joy becomes a foundation rather than a reward, your entire way of being begins to shift.
Let your joy lead. Let your soul breathe. Let your being do the work.
Recognizing Purpose Where It Already Exists
So often I sit across from clients who tell me they feel lost, like they don’t know their purpose. They’ve searched for it in their achievements, in their responsibilities, in all the places society tells us to look. But they still feel empty and unfulfilled. After we begin to talk, they realize something important: they’ve been looking in the wrong places.
Purpose isn’t found in checking boxes or pushing harder. In fact, sometimes the more we strive to accomplish, the more we disconnect from ourselves. Soul purpose is less about what we do and more about being an expression of who we truly are.
For example, if the authentic essence of who I am is freedom-loving, joy-filled, and
adventurous, then anything I choose to do that is rooted in those qualities is me living my purpose. Whether I’m coaching a client, mucking stalls, traveling, doing laundry, or enjoying a quiet evening under the stars—if I’m showing up aligned with my true self, then I’m living my purpose.
And when we live that way, something beautiful happens: we become vibrant, present, and deeply authentic. Others notice. Our presence uplifts. Our joy creates ripples. We stop chasing purpose and start radiating it.
Reflection Prompt
Take a quiet moment to sit with this question:
Where in my life do I feel most aligned with who I truly am?
Is it in your work? Your relationships? Your creativity? Your solitude?
Notice what makes you feel expansive, grounded, or alive. These are the places where your soul purpose is already quietly shining through.
