Turning Toward the Light: Remembering Who You Are

A Soulful Reflection for May

There comes a point on every soul’s journey when the path turns inward. Not to escape the world, but to finally meet yourself again.

May, with all its blossoming energy and lengthening days, invites us to soften, slow down, and remember. Not in the way we remember facts or dates, but in the sacred way of soul remembering—the deep knowing of who you are beneath the noise, the roles, and the years.

It’s not about becoming someone new.

It’s about returning to the truth of who you’ve always been.

Why We Forget

Most of us don’t mean to lose ourselves. It happens slowly—layer by layer.

We absorb messages from the world about who we should be.

We learn to prioritize productivity over presence, performance over peace.

We disconnect to survive, to fit in, to succeed.

And sometimes, we bury parts of ourselves so deeply that we forget they were ever there.

But even when forgotten… your soul doesn’t disappear.

It simply waits . . . Quietly . . . Patiently. For the right moment to be remembered.

The Wisdom of the Sunflower

Sunflowers have always been one of my favorite flowers. There’s something about their boldness, their joy, their unapologetic brightness that’s always resonated deeply with me.

Sunflowers are known for their heliotropism—they literally follow the sun. From seedling to full bloom, they turn toward the light. But here’s something beautiful: once fully grown, they stop following. They no longer need to search. They’ve become the light they once sought.

It’s a powerful metaphor for soul remembrance.

At first, we look outside ourselves for guidance and truth.

Eventually, we realize: the light we’ve been chasing is already within.

A Personal Story: Dirt, Dresses, and the Cowgirl in Me

When I was a little girl, my mom always wanted me to be frilly—bows, dresses, dainty shoes. The whole picture-perfect princess.

As for me? I was most alive with dirt under my nails, skinned knees, and the wind whipping through my hair. I was wild-hearted, drawn to open spaces and the untamed beauty of nature. I craved freedom and dreamed of being a cowgirl. It took me over 40 years to finally claim that dream—and that cowgirl.

That untamed part of me is alive and well—it’s the essence of who I am.

Picture of a cowgirl sitting with a horse and the wording "In a world full of princesses, be a cowgirl"

There’s a plaque hanging in my home that reads:

“In a world full of princesses, be a cowgirl.”

It makes me smile every time I see it. Because it reminds me that I don’t have to fit someone else’s story—I just need to live my own.

And maybe that's what remembering really is: Choosing your truth over someone else’s expectations.

Returning to the Sacred Within

So how do we return?

How do we remember?

It doesn’t require anything elaborate. In fact, the sacred is usually simple.

Try this today:

  • Sit in stillness for 5 minutes.

  • Breathe.

  • Place your hand on your heart and gently ask:

“What part of me is ready to be remembered?”

You may not hear words. You may feel warmth, tears, resistance, or peace. That is your soul speaking.

You don’t have to go anywhere to find it. You only need to turn toward your own inner light.

What Horses Teach Us About Soul Remembrance

In equine-assisted coaching, we often begin a session in silence. No agenda. No pressure.

Time and again, I watch as the horse reflects back the client's truth—not the version they show the world, the essence of self they’ve nearly forgotten. And in that reflection, something stirs. Something awakens.

“I feel like I just met myself again,” one woman said after a session.

Tears in her eyes. A soft smile. Something sacred returned.

This is the work. This is the gift. To remember who you are—and live from that place.

An Invitation to Remember

If you’re ready to turn toward the light within, I’d be honored to walk beside you.

Whether through coaching, equine work, or a soul-led conversation, you don’t have to journey alone.

You are never lost. You're Soul is simply waiting to be remembered.
